The first half of this academic year is drawing to a close, and students and parents will soon receive the grade report for Terms 3. Before I write more about that, I would like to share a personal story from my childhood. I was about 13 years old, and I went home from school with my end-of-year report to give to my parents. This report showed the results for all the subjects I had taken that year. It listed my final percentages and how I ranked in my class of 26 students. In mathematics, the subject I had the most trouble with, I was 26th with 79%. I paid no attention to the percentage, just the ranking. All I could see was that I was bottom of my class. I was quite upset, and my parents tried to console me with the words “Someone has to be bottom of the class.” and “You got 79%, which is actually good. ”They also said, “As long as you tried your best, that is all that we ask for.” These words in particular have stayed with me ever since.
Trying one’s best is an important feature of the KLAS experience for students. In fact, it is something that the Academic Dean, Mr Nishizuka, often says in assemblies when exams are approaching. We don’t expect students to get perfect scores or top grades. If they do, that is of course great. If they have tried their best, and their grade is 3, then that is also great, and there should be no reason to feel unhappy.
As well as in the classroom, students try their best in many other ways at this school. It might be by trying to get fewer crosses. It might be as part of a sports team. It might be by getting on stage and auditioning for the musical in front of an audience. It might be by joining the MUN team and taking on countless hours of extra reading and writing. It might be by joining a committee and working for the good of the school community. It might be behind the scenes, working invisibly to help or guide students with their difficulties. All of these, which come with both positive and negative moments, will help shape students into young men and women that can confidently face further challenges in the future.
In most cases, your sons and daughters will soon be home for the four-week winter break, and you will have many things to talk about – both what has happened in the past six months and what is on the horizon in the next six months. Some will have great academic results for Term 3, and some will have results that are lower. If they have tried their best, let’s recognize and appreciate that fact. And let’s appreciate all the other things that students might have already achieved this year or might be planning to achieve next year, all by doing their best for themselves and for the school community.
Finally, although it is still a little early, but as it is my last chance to do so, I send my best wishes to you all for a happy, healthy and prosperous holiday season and New Year.

今年度前半も終わりに近づいてきました。間もなく、保護者のみなさまはターム３（秋学期）の成績表を受け取られます。それについて詳しく書く前に、私の過去の個人的な話をしたいと思います。私が13歳くらいの時、年度末の成績表を持って学校から帰宅したときのことです。その成績表には、その年に私が受けた科目の年度末の成績とクラスでの順位（26 名中）が記載されていました。私が一番苦手だった数学は79%で26位でした。成績のパーセンテージは気にせず、私が注目したのは、自分がクラスで最下位ということだけでした。私はかなり動揺しましたが、両親は「誰かは最下位になるものだ」「79% も獲得しているのだから良い結果だ」 という言葉で私を慰めようとしてくれました。「頑張ってくれればそれでいいのだ」とも言ってくれました。特にこれらの言葉はそれ以来ずっと私の心に残っています。
全力を尽くすことは、生徒にとって KLAS での経験の重要な特徴です。実際、試験が近づくと教務部長の西塚先生がアッセンブリーでよく言う言葉です。私たちは生徒が満点やトップの成績を取ることを期待していません。もちろんそれは素晴らしいことです。全力を尽くして成績が３だったら、それはそれで素晴らしいことであり、不満を感じる必要はありません。KLASにおいては、生徒たちは授業だけでなく、さまざまな面で活躍し、がんばっています。それは、ルールを守ること、クラブ活動の一員であること、観客の前でミュージカルのオーディションを受けること、模擬国連に参加して数え切れないほどの課題に取り組むこと、委員会に参加して学校コミュニティのために活動すること、問題を解決するために目に見えないところで協力したり支援したりすること、というようなことかもしれません。これらには、ポジティブな瞬間とネガティブな瞬間の両方が伴い、将来のさらなる課題に自信を持って直面できる人間に形成されるのに役立つことでしょう。
生徒たちは間もなく 4 週間の冬休みでご家族のもとに戻ります。過去 ６ヶ月の間に何が起こったのか、そして今後６ヶ月で何が起こるのか、など話すことがたくさんあると思います。ターム３で優れた成績を収めた人もいれば、そうでない人もいるかもしれません。彼らが全力を尽くしたなら、その事実を認めてあげてください。そして、生徒たちが自分自身と学校コミュニティのために全力を尽くして、今年すでに達成したかもしれない、または来年達成することを目標にしているかもしれないすべてのことを評価してあげてください。
